A Bradford-born Royal Naval Lieutenant Commander who served in war zones around the world has died of a brain tumour at the age of 40.
Malcolm Parkin’s career started as a sea cadet in Bradford and he achieved his dream when he was accepted into the Royal Navy in 1987.
He worked his way through the ranks to Lieutenant Commander of a marine engineering regiment, travelling to Bosnia and Iraq.
The ships he served aboard included HMS Ark Royal and HMS Invincible.
But Lt Cdr Parkin fell ill shortly after he was contracted to serve with the Navy of the Netherlands, where he lived in his latter years with wife Rachael, a nurse he met during his training days and married in 1992.
Driving home in The Hague one night he blacked out and was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour, finally losing feeling in the left side of his body. He carried on working for nine months before he was placed on long-term sick leave and died at home. His mother, Pauline Pearson, 66, of Doncaster, said: “He was a good, likable lad, reliable and honest. He was a fun-loving person. He always wanted to be in the Navy and he worked so hard.
“Everyone loved him and he had many friends in Holland who looked after him very well when he was ill.”
Lt Cdr Parkin was chosen to represent the Dutch people at a Cenotaph service to remember those who fell during the Dutch Resistance. When he was on leave, Lt Cdr Parkin enjoyed taking part in battle re-enactments with his friends and rough riding in “his baby”, a yellow Range Rover, in Devon.
Born at St Luke’s Hospital, Bradford, in 1968, Lt Cdr Parkin, who was known by his colleagues as Sparkin’ Parkin, spent his early years living in Holme Wood.
He moved to Baildon and attended Ferniehurst School, Belmont Middle School and Salt Grammar School.
Councillor John Cole (Lib Dem, Baildon), who taught Lt Cdr Parkin A-level economics at Salt Grammar, said: “It’s a tragedy. He was genuinely very likable, with a quiet sense of humour and he was a really lovely student to teach.
“He was very capable and he used his gifts to the full. It’s a loss to society and especially his family.”
Former colleagues, including Dutch officers, attended Lt Cdr Parkin's funeral at the Royal Navy base in Portsmouth.

We think of the ones that we hold so dear,
We pause to give thanks for our friends so true,

And ask Him to comfort the ones alone,
For those who have lost someone they hold dear,
We ask Him to strengthen and hold them near.
For those who have prospered, with new joys to savour,
We ask God continues to show them His favour.

I've been feeling so low today,
